One of our favorite cottage-style architects,
Ross Chapin, has this philosophy that the front of a house needs "
layers" to transition from the public street to your private residence, you know, to define your boundaries. These are things like: gates, railings, hedges, flower boxes, etc (NOT chain link fences and pit bulls named "Razor Tooth") .
We like this idea, and definitely feel like our current set up leaves us feeling a little exposed. So we've decided to put up a fence wall right off the street. Here's the string line.
It'll only be like 3-feet tall and it won't fence anything in, just provide that first layer. We're going to make it out of cedar, just like our siding. Then we'll plant nice ornamental grasses around it so it says "we like you". I think it will be a nice transitional element, without alienating ourselves from the neighbors (who are super nice, ya'll.) Here's a fuzzy example of something similar I found on the interweb.
Why are we doing this now after all this talk about an outdoor deck? Well, you see, the wood for this project was purchased in April and it's now the end of the June and I want my garage back.
Happy Friday.
